Furniture Making and Design 5M2012

You will learn to design and make original pieces of furniture for use in the home or public buildings. You will experience the satisfaction of turning your own ideas into reality through the use of wood and other materials.

This Course is Designed to

  • Prepare participants for entry to Furniture colleges eg GMIT Letterfrack
  • Develop the design and woodworking skills required in the furniture industry
  • Prepare learners for apprenticeships in furniture or woodwork

Entry Requirements

  • Leaving Certificate, Leaving Certificate Applied, or equivalent
  • Interview
  • Mature applicants welcome
  • Applicants whose first language is not English will require a competency as stated in our admissions policy here

  • This is a practical course where learning takes place primarily in workshops and drawing rooms.

  • We provide learning supports that are tailored to meet the needs of individual learners.

There are no fees to study this course


  1. 1. What type of materials or woods will I work with? The learner will work only with the highest grades of solid timbers e.g. Spalted beech, Elm, Ash, Oak, Walnut, Cherry etc.
  2. 2. What prior knowledge and experience is required for the course?None. The learner progresses from the basic level of woodworking skills to a thorough knowledge of the woodwork design process.
  3. 3. Who designs the pieces of furniture that the students make? The individual learner designs his/her own pieces of furniture using an extensive range of woodwork and furniture design tools.


    This is full-time one-year course and runs from September to May
