Introduction to Drawing

This course is designed to increase the skill level of all students while also introducing creative approaches to creative thinking and art making. As you develop capacity for prolonged observation of objects, you learn to see and depict details with more accuracy and develop more sophisticated mark-making skills. Using these, you will more accurately depict volume, surface texture, proportions and relative scale within the picture plane. You make decisions with regard to composition. You will take into consideration relative size, and positive and negative shape arrangements to create an aesthetic still-life.

Course Content

  • Week 1: Introduction to Drawing -Use of Art Elements in drawing / Still life composition.
  • Week 2: Recognize a variety of surfaces and materials intended for drawing.
    Interpret light and shade on a surface plane. / Relate value to colour in drawing.
  • Week 3: Introduction to grid drawing.
    Begin with a series of small studies to practice composition, and value application to create form and surface.
  • Week 4: Select a primary source (object or photograph) to work from.
  • Week 5: Begin drawing from your primary source.
  • Week 6/7: Complete drawing - Group discussion and analysis of work.
